Hiring Process
You will be required to complete an application prior to the application deadline date. The application will be submitted to Powell City Hall.
After a review of the applications submitted, some applicants may be invited to participate in additional screening. This screening consists of three portions, a written test, physical abilities test and oral board interview. This testing is conducted in one day, and may take several hours to complete.
Written Exam
The written examination will include testing on general knowledge and skills. A passing score of 70% is required to move forward to the next testing portion. Approximately 2 hours are allotted for this test.
Physical Abilities Test
Police Officer Applicants Only
After successful completion of the written examination, an applicant will participate in a physical abilities test. This test is designed to mirror the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy (WLEA) fitness standard. The physical abilities test is commonly referred to as the "Cooper Standard" and assesses the candidate in three areas, to include sit-ups, push-ups and 1.5 mile run time. Additional information and requirements can be found here.
Oral Board Interview
Applicants who successfully complete the written examination and physical abilities test will participate in an oral interview to be evaluated on a variety of aspects by several members of the Powell Police Department. The oral boards are typically scheduled for the afternoon of test day.
If an applicant successfully completes the application and testing process, they may be offered a conditional employment offer pending the outcome of a thorough background investigation.
As part of the background investigation, applicants will be required to undergo a thorough psychological assessment by a licensed assessor.
