September 23rd is proclaimed as

“Family Day”

At last night's City Council meeting, Mayor Don Hillman, with the overwhelming support of the City Council, signed a resolution declaring September 23 as Family Day in Powell. I won't describe it in great detail because it is here for you to read, but I did want to add some personal thought to it. The family is the most essential and basic unit, and in our busy day to day lives we often forget the importance of family time. In an age of texting, email and cell phones the face to face personal relationship seems to fall by the way side. My wife and I raised 5 children and I cannot think of any other time during the day when more conversation took place than at the dinner table. I would like to encourage our community to consider this proclamation and participate in this event, if you don't have an established family day during the week already, try it, see what unfolds. You might be amazed at the conversation that takes place with your kids.

Thanks for your time.

"WHEREAS, the use of illegal and prescription drugs and the abuse of alcohol and

nicotine constitute the greatest threats to the well-being of America's children; and

WHEREAS, 15 years of surveys conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance abuse (CASA) at Columbia University have consistently found that the more often children and teenagers eat dinner with their families the less likely they are to smoke, drink, and use illegal drugs; and

WHEREAS, frequent family dinning is associated with lower rates of teen smoking, drinking, illegal drug use and prescription drug abuse; and

WHEREAS, the correlation between frequent family dinners and reduced risk for teen substance abuse is well documented; and

WHEREAS, parents who are engaged in their children's lives - through such activities as frequent family dinners - are less likely to have children who abuse substances; and

WHEREAS, family dinners have long constituted a substantial pillar of family life in America.

NOW THEREFORE, I, DON E. HILLMAN, Mayor of the City of Powell, do hereby proclaim Monday September 23, 2013 as

in Powell, WY and urge all citizens to recognize and participate in its observance.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and cause the Executive

Seal of the City of Powell to be affixed this 16th day of September, 2013."
